Happy to find two little critters in our haskap patch today. These larvae are well on their way to being Monarch butterflies by summers end. There is a sense in which farming is a cooperative arrangement with nature. This week at the orchard was all about propagation

This week at the orchard was all about propagation. About 6300 softwood cuttings of six different haskap cultivars were collected off mature plants in our fields, dipped in rooting powder and “planted” in peat plugs. Now comes the challenging part of keeping them cool and moist until they develop a root system of their own. #haskap #manitobafarmers #prairiefruitgrowers

Had to share this curious photo from a few weeks ago. 8 years ago we planted 5000 haskap plants on former Saskatoon berry ground. Despite our best efforts to remove every Saskatoon plant, it only takes a root piece or two to spark a slow resurgence. So for fun, we call these our “fruit salad” rows, where you can pick two distinct fruits in the same place at the same time. #manitobafarm #prairiefruitgrowers

My walk-through inspection of our Haskap (Honeyberry) rows today revealed lots of developing fruit. The secret is to lift a branch and look under those fresh, green leaves. Now we will watch as the June sunshine fills and ripens these berries over the next 3-4 weeks. We’ll let you know when they’re ready! #manitobafarm #prairiefruitgrowers #canadianberries

Our Smoky Saskatoons are in full bloom today which means we’re about 45 days to ripe and delicious berries. We are always amazed at the resilience of this native prairie species, waiting patiently to flower until spring truly arrives. Plan to visit us in Portage la Prairie this July for haskap, saskatoons and tart cherries.

This week there’s a “bridal show” at our orchard with plums, cherry plums and tart cherries clad in brilliant white. It’s perhaps the most beautiful week of the year - not to mention an intoxicating fragrance that stops you in your tracks. Three cheers for prairie fruit trees!
